This warm, spiced apple cider cocktail is made in the slow cooker with real apple cider, fresh oranges, whole spices, and a touch of maple syrup. It’s perfect for parties or a cozy night in, and can be served with or without bourbon or dark rum.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (1/2 gallon) apple cider, preferably unfiltered
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 apple (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji), sliced into rounds (optional)
  • 45 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 23 whole star anise pods
  • 1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, sliced into thin coins
  • 23 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • Bourbon or dark rum, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange and apple thoroughly. Slice the orange into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Do the same with the apple. No need to core the apple. Peel the ginger and slice it into thin coins.
  2. Place the orange slices, apple slices, and ginger coins into the bottom of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise pods.
  3. Pour the entire 64 ounces of apple cider over the fruit and spices. Drizzle in 2-3 tablespoons of maple syrup. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours, or on HIGH for 1.5-2 hours. Do not let it boil.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice level as desired. For a milder flavor, remove whole spices with a slotted spoon.
  6. To serve, ladle the warm cider into mugs, including some fruit slices and a cinnamon stick for garnish. If making the spiked version, add 1.5-2 ounces of bourbon or dark rum to each mug, then top with the warm cider and stir gently.

Notes

For best flavor, let the cider rest on warm for at least an hour after cooking. Do not add alcohol directly to the slow cooker; add it to individual mugs to preserve the alcohol content. Leftovers can be strained and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
