This quick and easy cranberry sauce features fresh ginger and orange for a bright, spicy kick. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s the perfect holiday side dish that tastes even better the next day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large navel orange (zest and juice)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • ¼ cup water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries under cold water and pick out any soft or shriveled ones. Zest the orange before juicing it to get about 1 tablespoon of zest. Halve the orange and squeeze out ¼ cup of juice. Peel a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger and grate it finely to get about 1 tablespoon.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and ¼ cup of water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the cranberries, ¼ cup of orange juice, and orange zest. Stir well.
  4. Stir in the grated ginger and a pinch of salt.
  5. Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a full, rolling boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. After about 10 minutes, check for doneness. The sauce should have thickened noticeably, with most cranberries burst. For a chunkier sauce, stop at 10 minutes; for a smoother consistency, let it go the full 12 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool for about 10 minutes in the pot. Transfer to a serving bowl or storage jar. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender after cooling. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
